ATTR amyloidosis

ATTR amyloidosis is the term for a group of rare diseases that are caused by a protein – called transthyretin (TTR) – not acting in quite the way it should.

In ATTR amyloidosis, this TTR protein becomes unstable and breaks apart. There are a number of reasons for this happening but, when it does, pieces of the abnormal protein can clump together. This ends up creating deposits of amyloid.

If amyloid deposits build up in your tissues and/or organs this can create health problems. Common examples include problems with the heart, nerves and digestive system.

In this section you will find more information on the two key forms of ATTR amyloidosis, as well as certain factors that may increase your risk of the disease.

ATTR
AMYLOIDOSIS

Wild-type ATTR
amyloidosis

Wild-type ATTR amyloidosis is not caused by a genetic alteration, as is the case with hereditary amyloidosis.

Hereditary ATTR amyloidosis

Hereditary ATTR amyloidosis is an inherited condition caused by a genetic alteration in the TTR gene.

Links to ethnicity and geography

Hereditary amyloidosis can be caused by more than one type of gene alteration. Some are more common in certain ethnic groups or found more often in certain parts of the world.
