Last week our CEO Kate Taylor and Director of Engagement and External Affairs Karen Davies were pleased to be a part of the Parliamentary launch of “The Other Side of Heart Failure” Policy Report on behalf of Amyloidosis UK. Organised by Bayer, Kate and Karen attended alongside representatives from the British Society for Haematology and Pumping Marvellous.
The report highlights the urgent need to improve recognition, diagnosis and care for people living with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) and transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy (ATTR-CM) — conditions that remain under-recognised within current care pathways.
Heart failure affects an estimated 1 million people in the UK, with a further 400,000 living undiagnosed. Around half of all heart failure patients have HFpEF, and ATTR-CM is estimated to be an underlying cause in 11% of these cases, often following a long and complex diagnostic journey.
We welcome the report’s focus on practical solutions: strengthening diagnostic pathways, improving coding and data, and enabling more consistent, community-based care. We also support its call to embed HFpEF and ATTR-CM within wider cardiovascular disease strategy, including the CVD Modern Service Framework.
Addressing these gaps represents a clear opportunity to improve outcomes, reduce inequalities in access, and ensure timely, appropriate and equitable care for all patients.
